Before John Cage (1912–1992), there was hardly anyone as consistent as he was in questioning the boundaries of music and its connections to other fields of art and the everyday world. A CRITICAL HISTORY OF INDUSTRIAL MUSIC
"Industrial" is a descriptor that fans and critics have applied to a remarkable variety of music: the oildrum pounding of Einstürzende Neubauten, the processed electronic groans of Throbbing Gristle, the drumloop clatter of Skinny Puppy, and the synthpop songcraft of Vnv Nation, to name just a few. But the stylistic breadth and subcultural longevity of industrial music suggests that the common ground here might not be any one particular sound, but instead a network of ideologies. This book traces industrial music's attitudes and practices from their earliest articulations--a hundred years ago--through the genre's mid-1970s formation and its development up to the present and beyond.
Taking cues from radical intellectuals like Antonin Artaud, William S. Burroughs, and Guy Debord, industrial musicians sought to dismantle deep cultural assumptions so thoroughly normalized by media, government, and religion as to seem invisible. More extreme than punk, industrial music revolted against the very ideas of order and reason: it sought to strip away the brainwashing that was identity itself. It aspired to provoke, bewilder, and roar with independence. Of course, whether this revolution succeeded is another question. . .

Auf rund 600 Seiten stellt Simon Reynolds Bands und Musiker vor, die auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise das Rad der Musikkultur neu erfanden: Public Image Limited, The Buzzcocks, Devo, Pere Ubu, The Pop Group, The Slits, Scritti Politti, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, Wire, Talking Heads, The Fall, Robert Wayatt, The Specials, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, The Human League, ABC, Art Of Noise und Frankie Goes To Hollywood, um nur einige zu nennen. Im Sommer 1976 explodierte Punk und zwei Jahre später waren nur noch Rauchwolken und ein Häufchen Asche übrig. Johnny Rotten fragte beim letzten Konzert der Sex Pistols spöttisch ins Publikum: Schon mal das Gefühl gehabt, verarscht worden zu sein?. Während die Politik weltweit nach rechts rückte und das Orwell-Jahr 1984 bedrohlich nahe rückte, verweigerten sich die Vertreter des Postpunk der rockistischen Herz-Schmerz-Lyrik und beschrieben die Trostlosigkeit der ehemals blühenden Industriestädte. Sie wetterten gegen Rassismus oder besangen Jacques Derrida. Indem sie sich nicht nur auf die Musik beschränkten, gelang ihnen der Entwurf einer echten Gegenkultur: Sie organisierten sich selbst und setzten den Do-It-Yourself-Gedanken endlich in die Tat um. Bands und Fanzines schossen wie Pilze aus dem Boden; es entstand ein Netzwerk aus unabhängigen Studios, Labels und Vertrieben. Simon Reynolds behauptet daher: Das Versprechen von Punk wurde erst mit Postpunk eingelöst. Doch auch einem neuen Begriff von Pop wurde der Weg geebnet. Bands, die einst in der Absicht angetreten waren, das kommerzielle System von innen zu verändern, gingen im Mainstream auf, und der Erfolg ließ ihre Träume platzen.
